Why do my Barefaced products sometimes pill on my skin?Updated 4 months ago

“Pilling” happens when products don’t fully absorb into the skin and form tiny flakes or balls on the surface. This can occur for a few reasons:

  • Too much product: Using more than you need can prevent absorption.
  • Layering order: Applying heavier products before lighter ones may cause them to sit on top of the skin.
  • Insufficient absorption time: Not giving each step enough time to sink in before applying the next can cause buildup.
  • Mixing incompatible formulas: Some ingredients don’t layer well together.

How to prevent pilling:

  • Apply products from thinnest to thickest (serums → creams → oils → SPF).
  • Use only a pea-sized amount where recommended.
  • Allow 30–60 seconds between layers so each product can absorb.
  • Let products dry completely (5-10 minutes) before applying your sunscreen.
  • Gently pat products into the skin instead of rubbing aggressively.

**Silicone-based makeup layered on top of water-based skincare products will be more likely to pill. Allowing time for the skincare to sink in before applying makeup can help. This is also true if using a water based primer and then applying a silicone foundation on top.

💡 Pro tip: If you’re experiencing pilling, try simplifying your routine and slowly reintroducing products to see which one may be the culprit.
